Michael Bower's short legacy lives on, in only a fictional nickname of a fictional character on a fictional television show. Bower came into the limelight as Eddie C. Gelfen, the dimwitted oaf who attended Camp Anawanna on the popular Nickelodeon television show, Salute Your Shorts. But Bower's memory lives on in the pseudonym he wsa affectionately known as, Donkeylips.
Pudgy. Acne-ridden. Confused. These adjetives would best describe Bower's role as Eddie "Donkeylips" Gelfen. Sidekick to camp bully Bobby Budnick, Donkeylips always found himself in all sorts of mayhem and mischief, the end result being him as the hapless victim. This is why we root for Donkeylips, because we all have a little Donkeylips in us. We have our moments of physical, emotional, and intellectual inadequacy, and yet we push on to live another day. And when the need arises, we aren't afraid to throw our weight around. This is Donkeylips is all of us, and we are all Donkeylips.
When the sad moment came, Salute Your Shorts being cancelled in 1993, many of us were distraught. No more Sponge. No more Telly. No more Pinsky. No more ZZ. No more Dina. No more Budnick. No more Ug. No more Camp Anawanna. But most importantly, no more Donkeylips. As many of us then stopped to contemplate our lives, some us lay waiting for the moment when Donkeylips would return to power.
Nine desperate years later, Salute Your Shorts is a fading memory. We watch television station The N, which commonly reruns old Nickelodeon shows such as Clarissa Explains It All and The Adventures of Pete and Pete, in hopes of one day getting our Donkey fix. As it becomes more clear with each passing day, that Salute Your Shorts will likely never return to the airwaves, we felt the need to step up and propogate the memory of Donkeylips to the masses, and what better medium than that of the world wide web.
Our fondest memories of Michael come from the legacy of Salute Your Shorts, and thus, his name lives on in the Donkeylips Fan Club.
